Coffee Grinders Let You Wake Up To Fresh Flavorful Coffee

24 July 2009 in Coffee

There is nothing better than waking up to a cup of freshly ground coffee in the morning. It’s a fact that coffee tastes better when produce with a coffee grinder to crush the coffee beans.  This is because the grounds are not exposed to air for very long and don’t have time to oxidize and lose their fresh flavor.

With coffee grinders, you can create enough coffee for what you are going to drink right away. In that way you can ensure you will always have the freshest coffee available.

When you buy ground coffee at the grocery store, it goes stale the longer you store it. It may even be stale by the time you buy it. You don’t have to worry about that when you buy whole coffee beans because the shell of the bean protects the freshness inside. So when you crush the beans with your coffee grinder, the freshness is released directly to your coffee.

There are three types of coffee grinders. They are the burr, the crusher, and the blade grinder. Of which our current favorite at the time of writing is the Solis Maestro Plus.  Of course each grinder  has its own advantages and disadvantages and can have an effect on the coffee you make.

The Blade Grinder

The most common coffee grinder is the blade grinder. It is the most popular because it is the least expensive and it produces grounds that make superior tasting coffee when compared to store bought grounds. These coffee grinders are also easy to clean and very durable.

There are some disadvantages to a blade coffee grinders however. They do not produce a fine ground or a ground that is uniform. For this reason, they cannot be used to grind coffee for espresso. Also, the blades spin rapidly and create friction that produces heat, which can have an effect upon the grounds and might cause them to taste somewhat bitter.

The Burr Grinder

Burr coffee grinders are further divided into two types, conical burr coffee grinders and flat wheel grinders. The flat wheel burr grinder produces heat because of its high rpms. This heat can be transferred to the coffee and affect its taste. Therefore, the conical type is preferred.

Coffee aficionados prefer conical burr types even though they are more expensive than the blade grinders because they do not impart heat and they create a uniform size of coffee grounds that produces superior tasting coffee.  One such example is the Capresso Infinity conical burr coffee grinder which is getting a lot of praise throughtout the coffee world.  These produce a very fine ground that is essential if you love Turkish coffee.

Conical grinders do not have many disadvantages other than the more expensive price tag. They are a little more work to clean than blade grinders and they can be noisy.

The Crusher Grinder

The coffee crusher works by crushing the coffee beans into grounds that are not uniform in shape. For this reason, crusher coffee grinders are not a very popular choice.

Conclusion

When you are shopping for a particular type of coffee grinder, think about how easy it is to use and clean. Consider the amount of beans that can be processed and the consistency of the coffee grounds produced. Compare the price tags. almost all coffee grinders will produce coffee that is superior to coffee that is made from buying store bought grounds.
